Number of visits: too many to countNur Bostan, boasting an impressive Western China decor and a delicious food to match, is a gem of a restaurant hidden underneath the shadow of Times Square and a prime destination for Xin Jiang delicacies.pros: Grilled chicken wings are a must, so is the lamb sauteed with fried naan. We also like its mixed sauteed vegetables. A pot of fruit tea (with sugar cubes) makes a nice long drink. The outdoor patio is a lovely feature, we moved to an empty table there to play an after-meal game on our iPad.cons: The service strives to be friendly, if inconsistent at times. The manager patiently refilled our tea long after our meal has finished and nice enough not to hurry us to leave, but the kitchen failed to send out the noodle for 大盘鸡 on our last 2 visits there. The heater in the dining room is very thoughtful & caring, it deserves a 4 for ambience.Comments? number of visits: too many to countI'm wondering wether this joint is related to 渔乡米坊. They have very similar menu, identical style of food, virtually the same interior design. Which one is the original, which one's fake? Or are both of them just a ploy of the same owner who want to corner the market for this particular type of diner (which is another mystery: is it categorized as snack joint, Cantonese restaurant or porridge place?). Anyhow, I like them both.Pros: Good, inexpensive food. The rice dishes, including my favorite pork slices with bean sauce, come in large portion. Wide selection of snacks & porridges, the fried shrimp fritters are particularly delicious.Cons: Service is barely existent. I had to ask four different waitress for water for more than 5 minutes, and finally had to grab it by myself from the tea tray.Comments? QQ: 858884301
Number of visits: 2This branch of Subway is not far from my restaurant. It has a cute second floor location, a space lastly occupied by my most favorite Japanese restaurant in GZ.Pros: It's got all the standard fare of the other branches, my favorite being meatballs sandwich and, occasionally, the Italian variety (hold the pickles & onions, please).Cons: They used to serve freshly-ground coffee in this branch, but recently they changed it to instant coffee. Shocking, I know. The Pepsi from the vending machine didn't have enough fizz in it either. An ok place to eat if you have either ample time to while away or little time to spare. Just don't expect top quality from it. 2 stars for not giving enough care to the coffee & sodas.Comments? QQ: 858884301
Number of visits: 2I had cheap set menus on both occasions that I went to Tairyo, because I didn't feel like blowing 300 uncle Maos for the same old "raw fish this, beef enoki mushroom that" meal (is there any other cuisine in this world that taste so monotonously uniform everywhere like Japanese food?).Pros: I think I had grilled salmon & octopus meal, if not grilled beef, if not grilled chicken. Can't be bothered to remember. Don't get me wrong, they tasted good. It's just they all look & taste the same in each restaurant. Feel sleepy trying to recall it.Cons: The staff once forgot to send out a sauteed vegetables that was a part of the set meal. No big deal though. My restaurant sometimes forgets a customer's dessert too.It seems like a good place to have a teppanyaki cooked right in front of you, one of the high point of Japanese dining. The set meals are worth a try. 2 for taste.Comments? QQ: 858884301
Number of visits: 1The word 'bold' comes to mind in trying to describe what Awfully Chocolate is all about. The first moment the store came into view when you were standing across the street, you immediately noticed how bold the color palette of the facade was, white walls flanking black steel beams which, in turn, framed a pair of massive wooden doors with brass knockers. The sight of two antique Chinese chairs behind the glass windows bookending the brightly-lit, all white modern interior space tells you that whatever is inside, it's not going to be something ordinary. And as you shift your sense from sight to that of taste, you'd discover that, bold it was on the palate as well.Going against the grain of the Chinese consumers' preference in lighter taste, the ice cream they served in Awfully Chocolate is made of premium dark chocolate, which makes it very rich, dense and, ultimately, satisfying.Awfully Chocolate is extraordinary in the sense that it isn't afraid to play with various elements of East & West. From the European black & white color scheme and the strong chocolate taste, to the antique Oriental furnitures and the classic Chinese-American takeaway boxes, Awfully Chocolate manages to achieve an experience greater than the sum of its parts. A 5-star execution of a 5-star idea.Comments? QQ: 858884301
